earth-rim-roamer

my weekend was mostly spent in the company
of flowing foam forms and shades & washes of red-orange
i like to think that these forms overflowed out of my
recent pastel drawing and are taking on a life of their own

my vision for this sculpture was somewhat influenced
by reading John Gardner's Grendel..
the retelling of Beowulf from the monster's p.o.v.
this wild creature maniacally stalking in the shadows of society
both repulsed and obsessed with humanity
he is forced into the role of
"a shadow-shooter, earth-rim-roamer,
walker of the world's weird wall."

i want this element of swampy sadness & crazed laughter
a tragic figure set loose from its moorings
always slightly ill at ease and out of place
all of its tragedy spilling out for everyone to witness
but steadfast in it's sad meandering

framing faux pas

i am beginning to think that my artwork
cannot be contained within a frame.

yes, the $1,000 estimate at the frameshop
and the joke of a frame i ordered online
were deterrents...

but you should have seen how
the plexiglass popped!
witnessed the snapping of the clumsy frame
upon contact with my pastel.

how could these riotous colors and heavy organic forms
possibly be contained within 90 degree angles
or rest peacefully beneath sterile plate glass?
